One Box, Every Chord

The chord finder accepts the way you actually write chords: C and Am, of course, but also F#m, Bb, A#7, G7, Cmaj7, Cm7, Csus4, Cadd9 and slash chords like D/F#. Names can use words too — C minor is understood just as well as Cm. Each search returns up to five playable voicings, ranked with the most useful shape first.

Twenty-one chord qualities are covered in all twelve keys: majors, minors and power chords; dominant, major and minor sevenths; suspended and added chords; diminished and augmented triads; sixths; and the extended ninth, eleventh and thirteenth families. If a chord has a common name, this chord finder can draw it. Coverage like that is the difference between a chord finder and a chord sampler.

More Than One Way to Play a Chord

The same chord name lives in many places on the fretboard. C major is x32010 near the nut, a barre shape at the eighth fret, and a compact voicing on the top four strings in between. The chord finder lists these alternatives together so you can choose by sound, by comfort, or by where your hand already happens to be.

Each diagram marks open strings with a circle and muted strings with a cross, and shapes far up the neck show their base fret. Reading the diagrams is a skill the chord finder teaches by repetition — within a week the marks feel as natural as tab.

Notes and Intervals, Not Just Dots

Under the diagrams, the chord finder lists the chord's notes and the intervals they form above the root. Am7 is A C E G — intervals 1 b3 5 b7. Seeing the formula next to the shape is what turns a chord dictionary into a theory education: after a few lookups you start predicting how new chords will be built before you search for them.

Every shape is generated on the fly by scanning position windows up the neck and scoring each candidate for playability: root in the bass, number of sounding strings, hand span, finger count and position. The scoring mirrors how a teacher would pick a student-friendly shape — low positions first, open strings celebrated, impossible stretches discarded.
